Paths are built the same way as a driveway, just at a shallower depth: excavate, membrane, compacted MOT type 1, edge restraint, then a hot-laid wearing course rolled to a smooth, sealed finish. That edge restraint is what stops a tarmac path spreading and crumbling along its sides after a couple of winters.
