How Much Does a Driveway Cost in Glasgow?
Driveway prices in Glasgow are driven by three things: the surface you choose, how easily we can get plant and materials onto the site, and what has to happen with the water. This guide gives realistic 2026 figures for each surface type and explains exactly what pushes a city quote up or down.
Average Glasgow driveway prices by material
For a typical Glasgow two-car frontage of around 35 m², that works out at roughly £1,900 – £2,500 in tarmac, or £2,800 – £4,200 in resin bound over a suitable base.
| Surface | Cost per m² | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Tarmac (new build-up) | £45 – £70 | Most homes — durable and best value |
| Tarmac overlay / resurfacing | £25 – £40 | Sound existing base needing a new top |
| Resin bound | £80 – £120 | Permeable, decorative front drives |
| Gravel with edging | £30 – £50 | Budget drives and rural access |
| Concrete | £70 – £100 | Heavy loading, commercial yards |
| Dropped kerb (council) | £1,000 – £2,500 | Forming new vehicle access |
Why city access adds to the cost
Narrow streets and parking restrictions
In the West End, Shawlands and Dennistoun a tipper often cannot get within 20 metres of the driveway. Barrowing sub-base and hot tarmac by hand adds labour hours and means smaller, more frequent loads.
Spoil removal in the city
Excavated material is charged by the tonne and city sites rarely have room to stockpile. Everything goes straight onto the lorry, so the dig-out has to be sequenced tightly around the tip runs.
Services under the surface
Older Glasgow properties have shallow gas, water and cable runs across the frontage. We hand-dig around anything suspect, which is slower but far cheaper than a strike.
Ground conditions
Made ground and old backfill are common across the city. Where the sub-grade is poor we dig deeper and add sub-base rather than laying over soft material that will rut within a year.
Permeable driveways and SUDS in Glasgow
Scottish rules are straightforward in principle: surface water from your driveway should not discharge onto the public road. You satisfy that either with a permeable surface — porous asphalt, resin bound or gravel — or by directing water to a soakaway, a lawn, or a linear channel connected to an approved outlet.
Drainage is not an optional extra in Glasgow's rainfall. Budget £250 – £900 depending on whether you need a simple ACO channel across the entrance or a full soakaway pit with a granular surround.
- Permeable surface — no separate drainage run needed, higher surface cost.
- Linear channel — cheapest fix for a sloping drive that runs toward the road.
- Soakaway — needed where there is no lawn or outlet; sized to the drive area.
- Falls and levels — a well-set drive sheds water before drainage even matters.
Getting an accurate Glasgow quote
For a deeper breakdown of tarmac rates specifically, read our full tarmac driveway cost guide, and see what we cover across the city on our Glasgow page.
- 01Measure the area roughly yourself so you can sanity-check the square metre rate.
- 02Ask every contractor to state the excavation depth and sub-base thickness in writing.
- 03Confirm where surface water is going, and that it is priced in.
- 04Check whether edging or kerbing is included, and at what linear metre rate.
- 05Ask what would ever change the fixed price once the dig has started.
- 06Compare three itemised quotes line by line — never on the headline figure alone.
