How coloured tarmac actually works
Tarmac gets its colour from two places: the binder that glues it together, and the aggregate suspended in it. Standard tarmac uses a black bitumen binder, which is why every drive starts out near-black and settles to a dark charcoal as it weathers.
Coloured tarmac replaces that binder with a clear or pigmented synthetic binder, then uses a coloured aggregate — red granite for red tarmac, buff or green chippings for decorative finishes.
